We are a Nation of Laws
I am a Libertarian at heart. I don’t believe things like building permits should really exist. They are, however, a legal requirement in certain areas. The argument that Freedom of Religion provisions of the Constitution exempt certain groups from laws is ridiculous (even if the laws themselves are ridiculous).
Example: Today I form the Church of Matt. The Church of Matt has one Supreme Doctrine, handed down from the Ceiling Cat Grey Kitty, which is that paying taxes to the government is forbidden. The penalty is eternal suffering with Basement Cat, and never-ending immolation.
I bet a lot of people would join the Church of Matt if the IRS suddenly rolled over and said “Wow, worshippers of Ceiling Cat Grey Kitty are SO exempt from taxes, after all, Ceiling Cat says they can’t.”
We are a Nation of Laws. I support the Freedoms defined in the Constitution beyond those of most. I fully support the Amish, and their desires and rights to live a certain way, as their faith guides them- But at the end of the day, declaration of ones faith does not exempt one from living inside the box that the government creates. Fighting to change or remove the box (for all, not just for your clique), however, is encouraged.
And did I mention that building permits are stupid?
